Attach the included long straps
to the bag. The straps slide under 4 strap guides. Do not attach anything to the
guides, and do not try to lift the carrier from them. The guides are not designed
to hold any weight or tension.
Place the carrier
on on a clean roof and on a protective mat with the side without zipper facing forward.
Don’t use the RoofBag logo as a reference -- it may be printed on the front
or the back of the carrier. Open the zipper and fill the carrier while on top of
the car instead of on the ground -- it may get too heavy to lift once it’s
full. To minimize wind noise and improve gas mileage, locate the carrier as far
back on the roof as possible, place more items toward the rear, to preserve its
wedge shape, and fill it so that the outer surface of the carrier is as smooth as
possible. Cushion the contact of hard or sharp objects against the carrier fabric,
to avoid fabric friction damage. Close the zipper and attach the straps as follows:
Hold one strap
so the folded, stitched strap end near the buckle points downward. Keeping this
strap orientation, thread the free end of the strap under the two front strap guides.
Open the front
doors of the car, run the strap across the interior of the car, close to the headliner,
and out the other door, and fasten the free end of the strap to the buckle on the
other end of the strap. Thread the free end of the strap through the slot near the
center of the buckle in a direction away from the carrier, and then through the
slot near the end of the buckle, in a direction toward the carrier. Pull the short
end to take up the slack. The strap should slide when you pull its end but not when
you pull from the main section.
If the car has
4 doors, repeat the above for the rear doors using the second long strap. If the
car has 2 doors, distribute the front and rear straps in the space available in
the top, horizontal section of the door frame. Whether the car has 2 or 4 doors,
the straps should be separated by at least 20”, run square to the door frame
and not interfere with the opening and closing of the doors.
Secure the free
ends of the straps with the end keepers attached to the straps, or by tucking the
free end under the strap, to avoid flapping during travel. Check the firmness of
the straps during travel and re-tighten if necessary. Secure loose portions of the
carrier fabric under the straps to avoid flapping in the wind. Flapping causes noise,
lowers gas mileage and may damage (delaminate) the fabric. Fabric delamination caused
by flapping or friction is not covered by the warranty.
